Lake Parramatta Reimagined: The Ultimate Family Destination
Lake Parramatta has been reimagined and is ready to welcome families just in time for the swimming season, following a $1.4 million transformation that makes it even more family-friendly.
What’s new?
After being temporarily closed for upgrades, the lake’s swimming area is now safer and more accessible for all ages. Families can enjoy a brand-new lifeguard platform for extra peace of mind, a gently sloping sandy beach perfect for little ones, plenty of shaded areas to relax, and a convenient outdoor shower for rinsing off after a swim.
The makeover also includes beautiful green spaces with six towering four-metre-high eucalyptus trees and thousands of indigenous plants, creating a peaceful natural setting. New sandstone walls offer comfy seating where you can sit back and take in the stunning views while the kids splash around. This upgrade has truly turned Lake Parramatta into a must-visit spot for family fun in nature!
Lake Parramatta itself spans an impressive 10.5 hectares, making it an ideal spot for families who love nature. Originally built in 1856, this manmade lake holds a special place in history as Australia’s first constructed dam and one of the earliest engineered dams in the world since Roman times. It once served as the primary water supply for domestic use until 1909 and is now heritage-listed, adding a layer of historical significance to your visit.
fun for families
Families can enjoy a wide array of facilities, making it a convenient and fun destination. There’s a children’s playground to keep the little ones happy, scenic walking trails for a peaceful stroll, and plenty of picnic spots with barbecues if you’re in the mood for an outdoor meal. If you’d rather leave the cooking to someone else, there’s a cozy café on-site. Public toilets and off-street parking add to the convenience, making it a hassle-free day out for mums with kids in tow.
Water-based activities are also a highlight at the reimagined Lake Parramatta. While motorised boats aren’t allowed, you can hire non-motorised boats to paddle around the serene lake. Swimming is another big draw—after being closed between 1920 and 1940 due to water quality concerns, the lake was reopened for swimming in 2015 following extensive remediation efforts. Since then, it has become a popular spot to cool off in the warmer months.
Lake Parramatta Reserve is a fantastic spot for families looking to relax, explore, and enjoy nature without venturing too far from home. With its rich history, kid-friendly facilities, and peaceful atmosphere, it’s a must-visit for mums and kids alike. See more about the excited upgrades here.
