Western Sydney International Airport set to open in late 2026
Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport
Western Sydney International Airport is set to open in late 2026. This new airport is on track to open fully operationally by the end of 2026, with domestic and international flights for passengers and freight with no curfew.
One runway, one gateway to the world
WSI Open Day was held on Saturday 22 June, and WSM got an exclusive runway tour with all the information you want to learn! The airports runway (yes, one runway) layers have been completed and it is looking super smooth. The runway is 3.7km long, and it is facing 230SW to 50NE due to the wind conditions in the area! It also has rapid taxiways that make it slightly more efficient than your typical taxiways/runways.
Fun fact: the foundation of this runway is 2 metres deep and it is filled with recycled sandstone from Sydney’s tunneling projects.
Passengers
From the runway, we could also see the construction of the passenger terminal, which will be able to handle up to 10 million passengers annually from opening. This one terminal will have both domestic and international flights.
New technology
The technology behind this is spectacular! WSI will not have an air traffic control tower, with its Digital Aerodrome Service located in Eastern Creek. Plus, the lights in the runway that will allow planes to land with nearly zero visibility!
WSI Experience Centre
WSI has an Experience Centre open to the public five days a week from Saturday through to Wednesday between 10am and 4pm. They have fantastic officers that will give you all the information you need to know about this airport!
